Annual Donors: American Foundations
A number of ACC grant programs are currently funded through annual and
multi-year contributions from several American foundation which are making a special
commitment to the Council’s work. For example, the Ford Foundation is providing
assistance for performing arts and cultural management fellowships in
Indonesia; The Henry Luce Foundation is supporting ACC fellowships for American artists and museum professionals traveling to Asia; the Rockefeller Foundation is supporting some of the
Council’s grant programs in the Mekong Region of Southeast Asia; the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the
Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Fund provide annual unrestricted
assistance to the ACC.
Donors in Asia
The ACC has four grant programs in Asia
that are supported by local donors:
The Council’s Hong Kong Arts Program, made possible by donations from a broad group of supporters in Hong Kong, provides fellowships to especially promising artists, students, and scholars from Hong Kong and other parts of China for research, study, and creative work in the United States. Limited support is also available for projects sponsored by Hong Kong institutions that involve Hong Kong-United States or Hong Kong-Asia cultural exchange. The Lee Hysan Foundation in Hong Kong is providing annual funding for two twelve-month fellowships, and eight other donors have made multi-year commitments to fund individual fellowships through the Hong Kong Arts Program: the Sir Kenneth Fung Ping Fan Foundation Trust I, the Hsin Chong-K.N. Godfrey Yeh Education Fund, Désirée and Hans Michael Jebsen, Raquel and Paul Li, Citi, Credit Suisse, the Sovereign Art Foundation and the AIA Foundation. In addition, numerous others provide annual contributions to the Hong Kong Arts Program. The Asian Cultural Council awarded eighteen individual fellowships through the Hong Kong Arts Program in 2006.
In Japan, the ACC’s Japan-United
States Arts Program is made possible through an endowment donation
from the Seibu Saison Group, paid to the ACC through the Japan
Foundation in 1983. Income from these funds has been supplemented each
year since 1989 by an annual contribution from the Saison Foundation in
Tokyo. Beginning in 1993, a group of former grantees in Japan initiated
a unique and extraordinary fundraising effort in memory of Blanchette
H. Rockefeller, who served as ACC chairman from 1980 to 1990. The funds
raised have been used to establish an endowed Blanchette H. Rockefeller
Fellowship Fund within the Japan-United States Arts Program.
In Taipei, the Council’s Taiwan
Fellowship Program was established in 1995 in partnership with the
Sino-American Asian Cultural Foundation, a foundation created
specifically to serve as the ACC’s partner in raising funds and making
grants on behalf of U.S.-Taiwan exchange. The program
is currently supported by annual donations from the SAACF, the Group 33
supporting committee, the Yageo Art Foundation, the Accton Corporation, and others.
Newest of the Council’s Asia-based programs is the Philippines Fellowship Program, formally
inaugurated in 2000 in collaboration with the ACC Philippines
Foundation, a foundation established in Manila to collaborate with the
ACC in raising funds and making grants on behalf of Philippine-American
cultural exchange. A broad range of donors in the Philippines and the
United States have contributed to the Philippines Fellowship Program, which includes the annual Quimson Fellowship and Natori Fellowship.
