Racquel de Loyola-Cruz


Ms. Cruz is a Manila-based performance artist whose work addresses migration, displacement, identity, and globalization in the post-modern, post-colonial Philippines. A prolific artist with prodigious creative energy, Ms. Cruz graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in music in 1996 and then went on to study traditional singing at the Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta from 2002 to 2003. Since concluding her studies, Ms. Cruz has maintained an ambitious schedule of performances throughout the Philippines, around Asia, and in Europe. Her inter-disciplinary work incorporates vocal work, sculpture, and site-specific performance and investigates a complex landscape of ideas concerning women, consumerism, and the contemporary world.

ACC support allowed Racquel de Loyola Cruz to research contemporary art, meet with artists and curators, and create new work in New York City, for six months in 2013. Ms. Cruz spent her time in New York researching arts and culture in the United States, exploring how immigrant communities intersect with and participate in New York City's contemporary art world. She collaborated with fellow ACC grantees in exhibitions in New York at Grace Exhibition Space, Panapoly Performance Laboratory, and Blackbox Theatre.
