Sunon Wachirawarakarn is a principal dancer with the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company, one of Thailand’s most exciting and important contemporary companies. Founded by ACC grantee Pichet Klunchun (2000), the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company fuses traditional Thai Khon (masked dance) with a Western contemporary sensibility, producing a unique form that has been critically acclaimed around the globe. Mr. Wachirawarakarn received a six-month grant from the ACC to participate in the International Choreographers Residency Program at the 2011 American Dance Festival, to participate in the Bates Dance Festival in Lewiston, Maine, and to take classes and explore contemporary dance in New York City.

A new physical vocabulary is created in Dancing with Death that marries this open, improvisational, organic and intuitive nature of folk expression with Klunchun’s contemporary choreographic system based on classical Thai dance. It is choreography of continuous creativity and an image of “life after death” as a never-ending cycle.
