Group 33 Celebrates Dancer Su-Chun Wu
In April, ACC Taipei hosted a retirement celebration for Su-Chun Wu (Dance, 2010).
Group 33 members, as well as Ms. Wu’s students and friends, were present to honor her contribution to Taiwanese performing arts and long-standing support of ACC.
Su-Chun Wu retired this year from her position as Dean of the Dance Department at the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA). Ms. Wu has had an illustrious 40-year career in dance and was one of the founding members of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. She first gained recognition for her iconic role as the lead character in ‘Legend of the White Snake,’ and has since performed in countless productions and festivals across the world.
Following a prolific stage career, Ms. Wu dedicated her time to fostering young talent and bringing Taiwanese performers to the forefront of international contemporary dance. Ms. Wu has also been a passionate advocate for traditional performing arts. She has collaborated with ACC alumna Xin-Xin Wang (Music, 2011) and the Nanguan Ensemble on numerous performances updated for contemporary audiences. In 2010, Ms. Wu received an ACC grant to study contemporary dance in Beijing and India, and subsequently served as a member of ACC Taipei’s advisory committee during ACC's grant application process.
During the celebration, Xin-Xin Wang spoke of Ms. Wu’s contributions to the field of performing arts as both an outstanding dancer and leader. This enduring friendship and collaboration between ACC alumnae—Ms. Wang and Ms. Wu—has yielded years of innovative performances and help to foster a new generation of artists.
As a thank you to her colleagues and friends, Ms. Wu composed the following short verse:
"The simple life, only shedding tears for sublime beauty.
Seek tranquility, let nothing tedious or loathsome disturb the calm."
