to research meditative and performative Buddhist practice in Thailand and Japan
Referencing legacies of political conflict, war, genocide, and environmental destruction, Soil explores crisis in three Southeast Asian cultures and transnational, East-West identity through the dancers' personal narratives and choreography.
Taking place in traditional and alternative performance venues, studios, and classrooms, the work is conceived as a public “conversation” between the artists’ respective aesthetics (butoh and hip-hop), cultural backgrounds (Japanese-American and African-American), and personalities.
