Dancing with Death

A new physical vocabulary is created in Dancing with Death that marries this open, improvisational, organic and intuitive nature of folk expression with Klunchun’s contemporary choreographic system based on classical Thai dance. It is choreography of continuous creativity and an image of “life after death” as a never-ending cycle.

A Touch of Contemporary Thai-Dance

The performance is conceived and organized by the internationally-acclaimed dance artist Pichet Klunchun. Pichet has won many awards and has performed in dance festivals around the world. The evening’s program will include his solo piece “ ”, followed by Tam Kai (Hunting the Chicken), an structured-improvisation directed by Pichet. There will only be one concert with limited seating for “ ” and Tam Kai. Make sure you don’t miss it!

Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts (AsiaTOPA)

Asia TOPA: Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts is an artistic celebration of Australia's relationship with contemporary Asia. Vital, fresh and always unpredictable, Asia TOPA offers a city-wide window onto the creative imaginations fuelling the many cultures of the region.

The Asia Triennial of Performing Arts features numerous dance works from all over the region. China’s avant-garde Tao Dance Theatre performs two pieces from Tao Ye’s Straight Line Trilogy; in Eko Supriyanto’s Balabala, women combine dance with martial arts while his Cry Jailolo is a paean to endangered nature; Javanese music duo Senyawa together with Dance­north and Lucy Guerin Inc present Attractor, a “trance-noise odyssey”; and in Dancing with Death, Thai choreographer Pichet Klunchun creates a space between life and afterlife inspired by the Phi Ta Khon ghost festival; and and the world premier of Wang Chong's "Little Emperors." Jen Shyu will have a solo recital on February 18.

Dancing on the Edge Festival | Unwrapping Culture

Unwrapping Culture brings together two exceptional male dance artists: Canada’s own Alvin Erasga Tolentino, and Pichet Klunchun, an outstanding exponent of the Thai classical dance style of Khon, who is known internationally for contemporizing this ancient form. Their first collaboration combines the technique, theatricality and storytelling elements of Khon to create a devastating critique of the corruption of authentic Thai culture by the forces of commercialization, in a passionate and bitingly funny duet which immerses the audience in the conflict between traditional and modern.

Pichet Klunchun received an ACC Fellowship in 2000 to participate in the APPEX Program at UCLA. Pichet received the ACC's John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award in 2013 for his distinguished contribution to the international appreciation and understanding of Asian art and culture, particularly for his dedication to preserving the integrity and vitality of Thai classical dance.

皮歇.克朗淳 舞出傳統超越當代爆發力 
他拜傳統舞大師學藝十六年,扎下深厚傳統舞根基,成為泰國知名舞者,卻無法因此滿足,遠赴紐約學習當代舞,激發他創立泰國第一個當代舞團,充滿爆發力且源源不斷的身體動能,作品深受國際舞壇重視,各國邀演不斷,屢獲大獎肯定。 

《靈薄域》 日 星 澳 三國共製 雲門獨家台灣首演 
《靈薄域》來自英文Limbo一詞,描述未知的生死邊境。舞蹈題材取自泰國鬼節,舞者身穿彩衣,在金色環形舞台上迴旋奔走,歡慶生命輪迴,成了一場美麗豐盛的嘉年華。 

從泰國傳統舞發展出一個全新的肢體語言 
克朗淳說:「直覺」是貼近身體本能的舞蹈。他認為,不管在生活或工作中,每個人應該利用與生俱來的「直覺」,「直覺」讓人用心體驗生命,察覺生活中每一刻的感動。 
克朗淳也說:「思維」讓我們在傳統裡自由。當傳統舞的舞者不再只是跟隨老師一個口令做出一個動作,每一個姿勢都開始賦予了自己的想法,傳統與當代接軌,於是有了全新面貌,舞蹈活了起來!

皮歇‧克朗淳,擁有深厚的泰國倥舞傳統,為了讓更多年輕世代認識泰國傳統舞蹈,他以當代舞蹈創作突破傳統格局,成功將泰國文化藝術推向國際舞台,卻也在自己的家鄉承受了「離經叛道」之名;陳武康,受台灣訓練養成的舞者,曾於紐約長期工作,近年密集與不同領域的藝術家跨界合作,他不受拘束而又變化多端的創作風格,讓他成為台灣當代舞蹈中,最令人難以捉摸而又期待的編舞家。

兩位來自不同文化與背景的編舞家,來到了不惑之年,他們相遇並共同展開了一場旅程:從自身出發,爬梳歷史,召喚過去身體的樣貌,在劇場及社會的歷史座標上,對照、並列、對話、反轉他們對於文化傳統深深的探問。
