On Friday, July 10, ACC and Christie’s partnered for a special auction during Christie’s Modern and Contemporary Art Evening Sale. Three of the 45 lots were sold in support of ACC’s mission to advance international dialogue, understanding and respect through cultural exchange. Generously donated by ACC alumni Cai Guo-Qiang (ACC 1995), Liu Wei (ACC 2011), and ACC supporter Zhang Huan, proceeds from these artworks will help further ACC’s work and provide opportunities for the next generation of artists and scholars.

The auction began at 6:30 PM at Christie’s Hong Kong to a flurry of bids. Auctioneer Georgina Hilton, with gavel in hand, masterfully fielded rapid-fire offers from around the world—orchestrating a cacophony of bids from phone banks, Christie’s LIVE online bidding, and an active on-site audience. ACC’s lots 142, 143, and 144 closed out the evening sale with resounding success, selling above auction estimates.

Zhang Huan’s Horse No. 2 (2019), a beautiful incense ash on linen from his iconic ash painting series, sold for HKD 250,000 (est. USD 32,500).*

Cai Guo-Qiang’s Peony and Dahlia No. 2 (2017) from his solo exhibition at the Prado Museum sold for HKD 4,685,000 (est. USD 604,500).*

Liu Wei’s East (2020) aptly closed out the night with its iridescent hues, selling for HKD 1,375,000 (est. USD 177,400).*

The excitement sparked by these works in ash, gunpowder, and vibrant oil yielded a total sale of HKD 6,310,000 (est. USD 814,400)*, fueling ACC’s mission of cultural exchange.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners at Christie’s and to our supporters: ACC Board of Trustees, ACC Hong Kong, preview attendees, auction bidders and the artists Cai Guo-Qiang (ACC 1995), Liu Wei (ACC 2011), and Zhang Huan for their generously donated works.
