You are warmly invited to a theatrical performance by the Contemporary Legend Theatre (CLT) (ACC grants between 2005-2020) of Taipei. Founded in 1986, CLT is internationally recognized for its groundbreaking reinterpretations of Eastern traditions and Western classics. Under the artistic direction of WU Hsing-Kuo (ACC 2006), the company fuses traditional Chinese operatic forms (jingju and kunqu) with dance, music, and multimedia to create a distinct interdisciplinary genre that Ariane Mnouchkine has called “World Theatre.” This showcase is divided into two parts: Attacking Zidu, a high-energy jingju showpiece that spotlights the performers’ technical mastery, and Caesar’s Maze, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar that mediates on power and contemporary politics. The audience will be able to witness two distinct yet interconnected classic works within one hour.
Bi-qi Beatrice Lei, Chair of the Asian Shakespeare Association, will introduce the company’s history and its acclaimed body of work. Starring Howie CHU (ACC 2024), Chang Wei-Chuan, and Lin Yi-Yuan, the performance highlights the actors’ virtuosity and physical artistry.
