A New Space for Contemporary Lanna Performance Through Ink and Movement

Chiang Mai, Thailand — Choreographer and performer Ronnarong Khampha, together with musicians Wittaya Polvitoon, Witsarut Tawinno, and Torpong Samerjai, present "Ink: Neo Lanna Dance" an interdisciplinary performance project that reinterprets traditional Lanna dance by integrating movement, music, and visual art.

The project explores the concept of “Neo Lanna,” a new expression of Lanna identity that remains rooted in cultural heritage while connecting with audiences in the present day.

“Ink is not merely a trace upon a surface, but a living movement.” —Ronnarong Khampha

Guided by this concept, the performance views “ink” as a trace of the body, breath, and inner emotion expressed through movement. The body becomes a living brush, creating lines, symbols, and marks that can never be repeated. Through movement language, the performance invites audiences to explore the relationship between body, space, time, and the beauty of imperfection, while expanding beyond conventional boundaries of traditional Lanna dance.

Supported by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC), this project aims to promote, preserve, and develop Lanna folk dance within the context of performing arts, extending cultural heritage into the dimension of the creative economy and making art accessible to the public free of charge.
