Taking this food of empire as its point of departure, the exhibition examines, from the perspective of Taiwan, a former colony, how the wartime state intervened in people’s bodies through the procurement and rationing of food and the use of visual propaganda. The venue is a stone fruit warehouse built in 1931 in Sapporo, once a supply center for Imperial Japan’s “national defense food.” While the Sapporo Autumn Fest outside celebrates the autumn harvest, inside, the exhibition recounts how the same agricultural produce was rationed as “fuel for the war effort.”
