Message from the Chairman

The Asian Cultural Council was established by my great uncle John D. Rockefeller 3rd in 1963. Inspired by John and his wife Blanchette’s love for Japanese art and culture and enabled by a generous donation initiated by Seiji Tsutsumi, ACC established the “Japan-United States Art Program” and opened its first Asia office in Tokyo in 1983.

With the leadership support of Seiji Tsutsumi and The Saison Foundation and the continuous efforts of the local ACC Tokyo office, ACC nurtures artists, scholars, and communities in Japan and throughout Asia and the United States through cultural exchange, in a unique way unlike any other organization. ACC provides unparalleled opportunities for collaboration, research, and creative work that transform the artists and the communities in which they live and create.

Today, we remain motivated by the profound impact our grantees make to advance cultural dialogue and mutual respect, and by the urgency and relevance of our mission in our increasingly interconnected yet culturally divided world.

It is the collective effort of our Trustees, supporters, staff, and grantees that make the ACC what it is—an exciting, meaningful, and inspiring organization. Together, we make important contributions to international understanding.

As we celebrate our past, we also look to our future. We will continue to fulfill John D. Rockefeller 3rd’s vision and serve as a critical link across continents, regional borders, disciplines, and generations and be a portal for Asian and American artistic professionals and cultural scholars to come together.

On behalf of the Rockefeller family and the entire ACC community, I express my sincerest gratitude to ACC’s gifted alumni, dedicated staff, and loyal supporters in Japan. We look forward to sharing the joy of cultural development together for the next 50 years and beyond.
