英語能「ペ・ポンギ」 / BAE BONG-GI: An English-Language Noh

October 03, 2026

Bae Bong-gi was brought to Okinawa from colonial Korea and forced to serve soldiers as a “comfort woman.” She walked day after day all over postwar Okinawa, never feeling settled. She passed away on October 18, 1991 without ever returning home. This October, her spirit will be back to life on the Noh stage as we memorialize the 35th anniversary of her passing. Based on House with a Red Tile Roof by Kawata Fumiko, Bae Bong-gi tells of trauma, pain, and endurance. It meditates on one survivor’s harsh experiences, but also on how all survivors’ unique stories might best be honored. Noh’s blend of austere staging and emotive richness draws the imagination deep into the characters’ inner lives, and is thus a uniquely powerful vehicle for sharing human experience.

This solo exhibition centers on Taiwanese contemporary artist Chen Ching-YAO's (ACC 2008) new series “War and Food” and takes “The Empire’s Fuel: Curry” as its theme. Britain’s expansion into India intensified in the seventeenth century, and curry became increasingly commercialized in the eighteenth. This history is itself a global history of colonialism, woven from spices and imperial expansion, dispersal and fusion.

Transparent Boundary

August 07, 2026 - August 09, 2026

Transparent Boundary is a 35-minute immersive contemporary music and new media installation performance that explores the ecological phenomenon of bird "window strikes". By constructing a sensory experimental space utilizing sound, wind flow, and kinetic installations, the audience is invited to move freely through the venue, following bird songs and traversing the gap between the visible and the invisible.

Driven by a live collaborative performance featuring percussionist Yen-Hsuan Wu and Guzheng musician Hsin Fang, interwoven with electronic sound and installations, Transparent Boundary translates the birds' encounter with invisible barriers into a metaphor for the human psyche. Through exploring this "invisible trauma," the work seeks to cross species boundaries and find a shared resonance within our collective vulnerability.
